Imam Shamil was born in 1797 into an associate Avar Muslim family.[3][4][5][6][7] but, there also are sources WHO say that he includes a paternal Kumyk lineage.[8][9][10][11][12][13][14][excessive citations] He was born within the little village (aul) of Gimry, (in current Dagestan, Russia). He was originally named Ali, however, following native tradition, his name was modified once he became sick. His father, Dengau, was a property owner, and this position allowed Shamil and his shut friend Ghazi Mulla to review several subjects, as well as Arabic and logic.

Shamil grew up at a time when the Russian Empire was increasing into the territories of the Turkish Empire and of Persia (see Russo-Persian War (1804-1813) and Russo-Turkish War (1806–1812)).
